Anna Centenary Library (South Asia’s Largest Public Library)
Massive steel supply for South Asia's largest integrated public library, spanning 9 storeys and over 330,000 sq. ft. Built to house over 1.2 million volumes with heavy floor-load carrying capacity.
Engineering & Strategic Scope
The Anna Centenary Library at Kotturpuram is South Asia's largest public library, built on an 8-acre campus with a built-up area of 377,000 sq. ft. Designed to house over 1.2 million books, the 9-storey facility features specialized Braille sections, children's discovery galleries, an 8-story sunlit atrium, and a 1,280-seat convention auditorium.
Architectural Expression & Spatial Dynamics
The building is aligned along a solar axis to optimize natural north lighting into reading areas, minimizing artificial lighting energy. The soaring 8-story atrium features a curved glass curtain wall held by slender horizontal steel wind trusses, creating a bright, scholarly ambiance.
Structural Rigor & Critical Environmental Criteria
Exceptional Floor Live Loads: High-density rolling book stacks impose concentrated live loads up to 12 kN/m² (three times standard office loads), requiring heavily reinforced slabs and deep steel transfer beams.
Auditorium Long-Span Acoustics: The 1,280-seat auditorium required a 36-meter column-free span engineered with heavy steel trusses designed to suppress acoustic vibration.
Atrium Wind Deflection: The 8-storey glass facade required rigid horizontal steel wind girders to resist monsoonal coastal winds without flexing.
