Engineering & Strategic Scope
Spanning over 13.5 acres, the Bihar Museum in Patna is a world-renowned cultural institution designed by Tokyo-based Pritzker laureate Fumihiko Maki in collaboration with Opolis. The museum houses precious ancient artifacts from the Maurya and Gupta empires within interconnected pavilions surrounded by tranquil courtyards.
Architectural Expression & Spatial Dynamics
The architecture reflects the state's historical prominence through humble, earthy materials. The exterior is wrapped in Corten weathering steel panels that age organically into a rich bronze-red patina over time, evoking the terracotta and iron heritage of ancient Pataliputra.
Structural Rigor & Critical Environmental Criteria
High Seismic Zone IV Risk: Located in the Indo-Gangetic seismic zone, the structural frame demanded high-ductility Fe 500D rebars and moment-resisting steel connections to safeguard ancient artifacts.
Weathering Steel Runoff Protection: Corten steel framing required specialized drainage detailing to prevent rust-wash staining on exposed concrete walls during the initial patina formation.
Subterranean Hydrostatic Water Proofing: Close proximity to the Ganges river resulted in high seasonal water tables, requiring continuous crack-controlled rebar in subterranean vault slabs.
