1. Executive Overview & Undertaking Scale

Engineering & Strategic Scope

The New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB - T2) at Chennai International Airport is a multi-level terminal spanning over 2.2 million sq. ft., designed to serve 35 million passengers annually. Sarvottam Steel was entrusted by tier-1 EPC contractors to supply high-ductility Fe 550D primary rebars for deep bored piled foundations and heavy structural steel sections for the terminal's undulating wave-form roof canopy.

2. Architectural Significance & Structural Concept

Architectural Expression & Spatial Dynamics

Designed through an international collaboration between Grimshaw Architects and Creative Group, the terminal draws visual inspiration from traditional South Indian temple architecture and classical Bharatanatyam dance forms. The dynamic wave-form roof cantilevers across expansive passenger concourses without intermediate columns, requiring high-tensile tubular hollow sections and precision-engineered nodal connections to maintain slender architectural sightlines while carrying massive glazed curtain walls.

3. Technical & Engineering Challenges Overcome

Structural Rigor & Critical Environmental Criteria

01

Coastal Saline Atmospheric Corrosion: Situated within 8 km of the Bay of Bengal, the structure demanded strict corrosion mitigation; external curtain wall steel fixtures required SS 316L grade with molybdenum content exceeding 2.0%.

02

Severe Airside Wind Uplift: The wide-span roof trusses had to endure cyclonic wind gusts up to 220 km/h (Zone IV wind loading) without micro-cracking or flutter.

03

High-Ductility Seismic Detailing: Foundation piles and shear piers required continuous length Fe 550D rebars with uniform elongation > 14.5% to comply with Zone III seismic provisions.

04

Live Airport Operating Constraints: Deliveries were synchronized with night-time tarmac airside curfews without disrupting 24/7 commercial flight operations.
